Children and young people’s view of an effective parent education programme

The Race Equality Foundation has received funding from the Department for Children, School and Families to undertake a one year project that builds on the work of the Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities parent programme. The project started on 1 April 2008.

What do we want to do?

In this unique project the Race Equality Foundation will gain the views of up to six sets of diverse children and young people on whether and how their lives have changed as result of their parents completing the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme. These children’s views will be gathered twice over, whilst their parents are completing the programme. Their views will be gathered by four young people who will be trained and then supported in running group interviews and recording them using video. These four young people will then lead the analysis and presentation of the findings of what works and why, focusing on how agencies can use the lessons learnt.

The Foundation, with the help of Flexible Films Production Company, will support four young people to be trained in interviewing, recording, editing and production techniques. These skills will then be used to produce a short film on what children and young people views were about their parents or carers going on the SFSC parent programme.

What will the interviews involve?

Together with Flexible Films we will set up meetings with groups of children and young people. We will make sure there are a diverse range of young people and an equal number of girls and boys. We will make sure that we have permission from parents and the children themselves to be involved in these interviews.

The young film makers will interview the young people twice, once at the beginning of the programme and once at the end. The interviews will ask children and young people about their views whether and how their lives have changed as result of their parents completing the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme.

Outcomes

A short film on what children and young people were about their parents or carers going on the Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities parent programme.
